If it's a true Springfield Armory Custom Shop piece it will have this in the serial number: CRG FBI DEA TGO-1 So many of you will simply ask, is the build quality any different? I personally own the NM models, compared to the N model I thought the slide and frame work better together. I hope this helps you identify your Springfield Armory pieces. Coyote3855 I did find a listing for the serial number range for Springfield Armory M1911s built in 1918 and it ran from 310000 to 355000. There was U.S. PROPERTY stamped on the left side of the frame on the dust cover and an Ordnance marking, also on the left side, near the magazine release. Military Issued 1911 Serial Number Tables This John Browning patent gun, Model 1911, was so named for the year it was officially adopted for use by the United States Army. The Browning design was so great, that it has been changed little in over 100 years of production. The serial number listings by month presented below were developed by Scott Duff, a recognized authority on and author of a series of books on the M1 Garand. The following information can be found in the books 'The M1 Garand: WWII' and 'The M1 Garand Serial Numbers and Data Sheets' found at Fulton Armory, and are used here with Mr. Duff's permission.

As a Federal military facility from 1794-1968, the Springfield Armory's records are, by law, maintained by the National Archive and Records Administration (NARA). These records are official documentation of the administrative functions of the facility. Specific records having to do with the disposition of a particular gun after its manufacture tended to be temporary and thus were not preserved as a whole. Some records did survive as incidental attachments to other, more permanent records.
There are entities that have compiled these references and, for a fee will give you that information or conduct research for you. If you wish to hire one of these entities, see the section above, entitled 'Private research services'. If you wish to search the holdings at NARA yourself, please visit https://www.archives.gov for information about their collections, hours, and research policies.
